Standing In Solidarity: Black Lives Matter
Dear friends,
Like many of you I have been horrified and heartbroken by the senseless murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. As an Asian woman, I have definitely experienced racism, but I have never had to fear being unreasonably picked on or even killed by law enforcement. I guess my skin color and my perceived weakness has kept me “safe” - that in itself is a privilege I need to recognize. We have to lift our Black brothers and sisters up, because none of us are truly free until we are all free.
Growing up in Singapore, my teachers taught me to be politically neutral and just obey the authorities. My parents taught me to mind my own business and stay out of trouble. But racism exists. And we can only begin to combat racism when each of us stands up, speaks out and fights for the rights of those who are treated unfairly time and time again.
Love Always
