Conceal While You Heal: Our Favorite Plastic Surgeon’s Post-Procedure Makeup Tips

In the past few years, cosmetic surgery has undergone its own transformation with the rise of minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. It’s not hard to see why so many women are opting for treatments like laser, chemical peels, and micro-needling. They’re proven to be corrective and preventative while resulting in less pain, time, money, and downtime than traditional cosmetic procedures.

But of course, there is still some recovery involved. The objective of aesthetic technology is to compromise the skin’s barrier by creating “micro trauma” which stimulates remodeling and regeneration of new, improved skin. As a result, skin is left more sensitive and prone to irritation in the days following a treatment. We sat down with our favorite Double Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Christie Prendergast, to chat about post-procedure makeup – including what to look for and what to avoid.

“When we compromise the skin barrier, we want to exercise caution with post-procedure products as this can result in clogged pores, sensitivity, and prolonged healing time,” Dr. Christie said. She drew parallels between general concerns for Asian skin, such as increased oil production, excess water loss, sensitivity, and hyperpigmentation, and concerns for post-procedure clients.

“The unique concerns of Asian skin cross over with concerns we have in post-procedure products. Many of my patients ask me when they can return to their regular makeup routine or want to have a solution for coverage after treatments to decrease their social downtime. I usually wait for the skin to fully heal based on poor options for good coverage on compromised skin.”

That is, until she discovered our Come Closer Skin-Perfecting Foundation. Because our foundation was created to address the concerns of Asian skin, it contains many ingredients that make it an ideal foundation for both everyday and post-procedure use. It not only uses hyaluronic acid, a gentle yet powerful hydrator, but it’s also made with Evodia Rutaecarpa. A favorite in traditional Chinese medicine, this flower is clinically proven to be a powerful anti-inflammatory when applied topically to the skin. Dr. Christie noted that this makes it the perfect ingredient for those with underlying rosacea as well. Come Closer also contains Tahitian pearl extract – another ingredient with deep roots in Chinese medicine, and one that has been scientifically proven to enhance fibroblasts in wound healing. “I also love that it’s unscented and truly non-comedogenic (and has undergone rigorous testing to demonstrate this),” she added.

One last tip from the pro: winter is the best time for cosmetic procedures. “The winter months are an excellent time to address skin concerns and perform in-office lasers, chemical peels, or micro needling to address the sun damage from the summer months,” she told us. So, if you’re thinking about taking the leap, there’s no time like the present – and now, you can go into it confidently, knowing Come Closer is the best choice for post-procedure coverage.
